Favorite Apps

As someone with dyslexia, these apps have been game-changers for getting through everyday life and high school. They've transformed reading, writing, and learning from frustrating struggles into manageable tasks. These are my personal picks for the tools that actually work – from turning dense textbooks into audio I can understand, to catching spelling mistakes before I embarrass myself. If you're dyslexic, I hope these help you too.

Speechify: Essential Text-to-Speech for Learning

Speechify converts any written text into natural AI-generated speech. It reads documents, articles, PDFs, and books aloud, with OCR technology to scan physical texts.

Dyslexia makes reading challenging and exhausting. Speechify solves this by turning any text into audio instantly.

Key Benefits:

  • Instant Access - Convert history papers, articles, or textbook chapters to audio immediately (most classroom materials don't have audiobooks)

  • Better Comprehension - Listen while reading along visually for improved understanding

  • Speed Control - Adjust reading pace unlike fixed audiobooks

  • Academic Equality - Access the same materials as classmates without decoding struggles

Speechify lets dyslexic students focus on learning concepts rather than struggling with text, making them active participants in classroom discussions and coursework.

  • Whispersync: When available, sync between Kindle ebooks and Audible audiobooks to follow along with text

  • Learning Features: Bookmarks, notes, and speed control for personalized learning

Limitations for Students:

  • Only works with books available in Audible's catalog (can't convert classroom handouts or articles)

  • Subscription cost may be prohibitive for students

  • Limited academic/textbook selection compared to popular fiction

  • Audible excels for leisure reading and some educational content, but dyslexic students still need tools like Speechify for daily classroom materials, research papers, and custom documents that aren't available as commercial audiobooks.
